While other gems are mineral crystals made from the earth, pearls are created from life itself. They've been worn for over 6 millennia, making it one of the oldest of all gems and also one of the most sought after. In Hyderabad, pearl trading was greatly encouraged by the Nizams and the dynasty of Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahi and thus it flourished in India, making Hyderabad synonymous with ¨City of Pearls.¨ Almost the entire population of Chandanpet, a village just in the outskirts of Hyderabad, is dedicated to the skilled artisanship of curating pearls from drilling, boiling, bleaching and washing them before they are brought to the market to be adorned by women from all over the world.
Aside from it's aesthetic beauty, it is also believed to have healing properties and is considered a symbol of purity. According to Hindu philosophy, Krishna caught the first ever pearl from the sea and gifted to his daughter on her wedding day as a token of pure love and affection.
